Face IT

Face It@Home

Are you a Health Professional working with adults who an altered or different appearance?

Could your service users benefit from an online support tool to help them to manage their appearance concerns?

In November 2011, the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR) launched ‘Face IT’, their online support programme for adults with appearance-related distress as a result of a condition, injury or medical treatment that affects their appearance. The programme’s development and evaluation was funded by Changing Faces, and the European Union. It was devised by Dr Alyson Norman (nee Bessell) and experts at CAR.

‘Face IT' is an 8 week programme which helps users to manage negative reactions to their appearance by building social skills and self-confidence and to challenge their negative assumptions and thoughts about their appearance and how others view them by using cognitive behavioural strategies.

‘Face IT’ has been tested in a randomised controlled trial and has been found to significantly reduce anxiety and appearance concerns. The tool has been well received by clinicians and patients and is now available to health professionals who have received training in its use. For further information please visit the Face IT website or email info@faceitonline.org.uk or contact Alyson Norman.
